Summary
With the introduction of the principle of High Resolution Continuum Source AAS (HR-CS AAS), the barrier and the limitation of traditional AAS to analyze non-metals are overcome. With the availability of any wavelength in the spectral range without the requirement for specific lamps, HR-CS AAS makes molecular absorption spectrometry (MAS) possible, opening up completely new possibilities and alternative analytical methods for the determination of elements like S, P and the halogens.

In this lecture the possibilities and advantages of the HR-CS AAS for the determination of non-metals using molecular absorption spectra on the example of fluorine are shown for different matrices. New possibilities and limitations are shown. A simple method development to get reliable and sensitive results for fluorine is demonstrated to motivate analysts to rediscover and investigate AAS, or better MAS, as determination method for non-metals.
